I NEVER fail to be intrigued by the eye-catching posters which we sometimes see outside churches - you know, with amusing slogans designed to make us smile, or clever captions aimed at grabbing the attention of people passing by.
Perhaps some of the simplest and most encouraging words I've ever read on a poster were those of George Craig Stewart who, as Bishop of Chicago, should surely have known what he was talking about:
"The church is not a club for saints; it is a hospital for sinners."
What a heartening way of putting it!
